( i ) APPLICATION OF GAUSS'S LAW

( i ) Electric Field due to an Infinitely Long Straight Charged Wire or Line Charge: - Let l  = uniform charge density along the length of the conductor. From symmetry, the magnitude of electric field at all points like P over the curved surface of the cylinder of radius r and length L, whose axis coincides with the conductor, will be the same. The direction of the field at all points on this surface and also at all points on two ends of the cylinder is radically outwards if l  > 0.
Using Gauss’s Law,                 F = Q / e0
    E × D A = Q / e0             Therefore 2 p r L E = L / e0
